The SnowCastle of Kemi is closed from 8.3.2014

SNOWCASTLE OPERATIONS DURING THE END OF THE SEASON 2014

Due to the extremely unusual weather conditions of long periods of warmth and great many rainfalls this spring, we are obliged to close the SnowCastle season earlier than ever before. The melt water draining down from the hill on the shore where the SnowCastle is situated by the Gulf of Bothnia and the additional accumulated humidity caused by the rain, have made the SnowCastle area dangerously slippery and wet all around. However, there is no danger for the constructions of the Castle to collapse, but our maintenance
service is not capable of drying the ground areas of the SnowCastle well enough for safe moving about in the Castle. For this reason the operations of the SnowCastle at the end of this season will be diminished and we will be providing services under quite exceptional conditions.

The CastleLounge is open daily until March 29th,  at 10 am - 2 pm. There is free entrance to the CastleLounge and you can enter the CastleLounge through the SnowCastle main entrance.

The SnowCastle Restaurant and SnowHotel season has reached its end.

Of the SnowCastle events, informed previously,  the Mumin Day will also be realised the next Saturday, March 22, in the SnowCastle Yard. You can enter the Mumin Day event with your previously purchased season card, or you may purchase the entrance ticket of 5€ for the event. Children under the age of 4 have free entrance.

The visitors who have purchased the season card 2014 will receive a discount for the 20th anniversary SnowCastle season card next year by showing this year’s card. We will begin selling the new season cards this coming autumn.

Guests' experiences

Thousands of overnighters have slept and dreamt in the SnowHotel. Here a small sample of those memorable nights:

"We have seen a lot but the SnowCastle is really the high-point of our vacation! A true masterpiece! Congratulations! Food was delicious and we wish to sleep nice and warm in the SnowHotel."
  - Two Hotel-guests from Belgium

"We are spending our Honeymoon in Lapland. The first night we are going to sleep in the SnowHotel of Kemi and everything looks great! The start for the rest of our vacation is looking good. Thank you!”
 - Hotel-guests from Holland

"The wintry night outside is dark and cold, the thermometer shows  -30 degrees Celsius. After we enter the SnowHotel, the air inside our room feels warm. The room is like a tiny nest inside the snow, and not even a hush can be heard as I look at the fabric in the colours of Aurora Borealis, dug deep into my sleeping-bag on the bed.  Even though the cool air pinches the tip of my nose a little, inside the sleeping-bag I feel warm.

In the morning I wake up refreshed, and quickly get dressed in the outer clothing that still are warm, as I placed them under my sleeping-bag before going to sleep. I take the few steps into the CastleLounge for breakfast, and then head for the sauna. Boy, how the fresh air has made me hungry!”

Frequently asked questions – Constructing the SnowCastle

Is the SnowCastle built anew every year?

Yes. We start the construction of the SnowCastle always in the beginning of December as soon as the weather is appropriate for making the snow: the temperature has to be continuously at least -8 degrees Celsius. The construction-work usually takes about 6 weeks, and then we have the opening-ceremony at the end of January. The SnowCastle remains open all the way to the beginning of April, after which the sun is usually shining so brightly and warmly that it creates cosmetic damages to the appearances of the SnowCastle-structures.

Are there any support-structures in the SnowCastle?

No. In constructing the SnowCastle we use moulds, on which we blow the snow with a specific snow-blower. When the snow has hardened, we remove the moulds.

What happens to the SnowCastle when it is closed at the end of the season?

Unlike that it is usually understood, the structures of the SnowCastle would last much longer than unto the beginning of the month of April.  When the SnowCastle is closed for the season, the structures are crushed so that they would melt more quickly. From time to time the snow is pushed with a tractor-loader unto the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia, and so it melts into the sea.  By the middle of May the whole SnowCastle area will be empty of snow, and the summer-restaurants by the quay at the Inner Port of Kemi will begin their season.

Where do you get the ice used for ice-sculpting?

All the ice as well as the snow that we use in constructing the SnowCastle, we take from the Gulf of Bothnia, by which the SnowCastle is rising every winter. From this sea-water we blow the snow needed for the construction, and from the ice we make the ice-tables for the SnowRestaurant as well as sculpt all the ice-sculptures.

Frequently Asked Questions – The SnowCastle

How can you best get into the SnowCastle?

Instructions how to drive / travel into the SnowCastle you will find at: Driving / Travel Instructions.

Is the SnowCastle open around the year?

The SnowCastle is open every year from the end of January to the beginning of April. In the beginning of April the weather usually gets so warm, that the appearance of the SnowCastle will start to suffer – even though the constructions of the Castle would last longer, we still close the Castle at this time. Constructing the new SnowCastle always begins in December.

Is the SnowCastle open daily?

The opening hours for the SnowCastle you will find at: Opening Hours.

How much is the entrance-fee?

The entrance-ticket, good for the whole day, is: 8 Eur / adult, and children from 4 – 11 years 4 Eur.

What is there to see in the SnowCastle?

The SnowCastle itself is a spectacle – we do build it anew, and differently, every year! Inside the Castle you will see plenty of IceSculpting, which the ice-sculptors sculpt following the theme each year. In the SnowRestaurant there are three different cabinets and in the SnowHotel 21 rooms, which all are open for you to see during the opening hours of the Castle. For children – and for anyone with the playful spirit and mind of a child, we have the snow-tube where you can feel the thrill of sliding down fast, as well as other exciting activities inside the walls of the SnowCastle for kids to spend their time with. We could even consider the appearances of our SnowCastle-mascots, Arttu and Terttu, as a daily event and a spectacle in itself!

Can we bring our pets with us into the SnowCastle?

Unfortunately you cannot bring your pets with you into the SnowCastle, because we do have a restaurant here.

Frequently Asked Questions – The SnowRestaurant

What is on the menu in the Restaurant and will the food be warm when served?

The food in the SnowRestaurant will always be warm when served, and it will be delicious! Underneath your plate you will have a wooden plate, which will prevent your plate from getting cold from the ice-air arising from the ice-table. If you are just lightly hungry, you will also find a selection of salty pies to eat at the SnowRestaurant.

Is the SnowRestaurant open for just anyone to come and eat there?

Yes, the Restaurant is open for singles and groups alike. Reservations must be made in advance. Easiest way is to book your dinner from our online shop.

Are there other places to eat at the SnowCastle besides the SnowRestaurant?

Within the SnowCastle area we have the CastleLounge with a bar and a café. In the café you can enjoy little bites of sweet or something light and salty. Warm dishes in the SnowCastle area are only served at the SnowRestaurant. You will find more information about the CastleLounge here.

Frequently Asked Questions – The SnowChapel

Can you really get married in the SnowChapel?

Yes. The SnowChapel functions in co-operation with the Church of Kemi and in the beginning of every season we have the consecration of the SnowChapel. The SnowChapel is ecumenical and is open for all church groups. Tens of couples from around the world have already had their memorable weddings in the SnowChapel.

Have you ever had christenings in the SnowChapel?
Yes. From February to March you can have a christening arranged in the SnowChapel.
